Trusting responsive IT to support the UK’s insurers in the event of terrorism

A new Head of IT, Mark Harris, was brought on board to review Pool Re’s IT; “We undertook a significant full tender process that included 15 firms and after careful deliberation selected Niu Solutions based on the strength of its security, overall proposal and the clear commitment demonstrated during the process.”

A trusted partner

Pool Re was formed in 1993 by the insurance industry in cooperation with the UK Government as a mutual reinsurer, which offers commercial property reinsurance in the UK. Membership of the scheme provides cover for losses resulting from acts of terrorism, regardless of the scale of the claims.

The company manages a £5.5 billion fund and has an annual premium income of £300 million. In the past 20 years, the Pool Re fund has paid out following 13 separate terrorism incidents covering losses of over £600 million.

Having a trusted IT partner is critical to Pool Re’s success and the ability of its workforce to actively and efficiently work with its members and manage its fund. Furthermore, if a major act of terror was to occur the organisation needs the secure systems and flexibility to facilitate its critical role.

A responsive partner

Responsive IT and commitment are key for Harris. His IT partner needs to be an extension of the Pool Re team, available, dedicated and fully committed to working in close partnership.

The work Pool Re IT team undertakes is critical ad therefore they need to know they can rely on their IT partner. “From the first meeting where niu’s CEO made a commitment to meeting our stringent migration deadline we haven’t looked back”. The migration occurred in a matter of just a couple of months with a dedicated Niu Solutions consultant on-site to ensure a smooth transition.

Being able to pick up the phone and know a request or ticket will be dealt with immediately is incredibly refreshing. As with all IT implementations we did have one or two teething problems but it’s the way you deal with them that counts. Niu’s team were there straight away and resolved the issues professionally and before they impacted our business.

A secure partner

In Pool Re’s line of work; business continuity is key.  That’s why they also took advantage of Niu Solutions’ Workspace product, which enables secure, remote working from any device.  This enables greater flexibility for Pool Re, as staff are more mobile.

Workspace has also enabled Pool Re to make significant cost savings by retiring a physical disaster recovery site as staff are now able to work remotely from home or any other location. Should Pool Re need to vacate its London headquarters business could continue as usual as their teams can access applications securely, from any device, whenever they need them.

We are FCA and PRA regulated as well as answering to her majesty’s treasury and we receive data from our insurance company members. All that means we need to have the highest security standards and Niu Solutions’ ability to deliver two-factor authentication and secure facilities was a compelling feature of its tender.
