Outside of work I have always been an avid photographer.  For a while I even photographed weddings and portraits on the weekend. During that time I spent considerable time reviewing all the latest camera bodies, lenses, flashguns, studio lighting, tripods, computers, photo software, etc.   Without realising it I had spent a considerable amount of time and effort getting to a point where my camera gear was suitable for the job in hand, at a price point I could afford and, just as importantly, it all worked together seamlessly.

Last Thursday night we held the niu quarterly company update.  Now, when I say quarterly, we’ve held only one in the last twelve months, but the intention is to be quarterly from now on and I think last night encapsulated why.

This morning we announced the sale of a number of our contracts that are primarily focused on the delivery of commodity services such as broadband, telephony lines and calls, or onsite telephony installations, to Daisy.  The transaction allows us to focus on our key service offerings in hosted IT and IP telephony, cloud-based solutions, and our security and compliance practice. It comes with mixed emotions, largely because it means fundamental changes for our staff, which are never easy, but the outcome will be the right result for everyone involved.  If you strip back the contractual and financial complexity, we have re-aligned our customers into the most appropriate delivery vehicles; those who are looking for simple telephony services and those who are looking for the higher value service lead approach that niu provides.

You’ve probably seen the picture before: A comms room with CAT5 cables tied together in a giant, messy knot, flowing out of the front of cabinets, or squashed through cabinet spacers. Dead PC’s, laptops and printers, gathering dust and coffee rings, and slowly cannibalised for parts.

As an avid sports car enthusiast, I’ve strived to find the perfect car for myself. 

I’ve fallen for the flashy adverts, impressive showroom with free coffee and croissants, the endless motoring magazines reviews, and my mate’s recommendations.  I’ve even listened to Jeremy Clarkson on TV telling me “this is the car for you”!
